by Rother Walking Guides, and “Walking in the Valais” by Kev Reynolds (Cicerone).
Scrambles and Vie Ferrate or KlettersteigI know of 4 vie ferrate in Saastal and there may be more – details from the tourist offices. Also Rother Walking Guides publish “Via Ferrata Switzerland”.
Rock ClimbingThere is a large crag called Dri Horlini at about 3000 meters, above the Almagellerhutte. Sport & traditional multi-pitch. Other major crags would require a car trip out of the valley. Reference “Schweiz Plaisir West” by Jurg von Kanel. (Pete Kelly has copy). There are at least 4 valley crags. There is a new guide to cragging in the valley – available from the climbing schools – but I haven’t found it yet.
AlpinismSaastal is an excellent centre for alpinism, and is surrounded by many peaks around or over 4000 meters. I think the normal routes up seven 4000 meter peaks start from Fee or Grund. I have the following 2 guidebooks: “Valais Alps East: Selected Climbs” by Peter Fleming & Les Swindon “The Alpine 4000m Peaks by the Classic Routes” by Richard Goedeke.
SkiingThere are five glacier pistes, open all year.
Meet co-ordinatorI am the meet co co-ordinator, so please get in touch with me if you are thinking of going. There is a strong interest in alpinism this year. So far, Mhairi, Gemma, Graham & I have committed to go. Dave Kyles |
