AccessThere are lots of options by road and cross channel ferry. Alternatively there are flights to Geneva & Zurich. I have used Easyjet to Geneva in the past. Although car hire is an option, you can catch a train within the airport to Visp, then the postbus to Saas Grund (buy a cheaper advance ticket via the Swiss Travel Service – last September this was £70 return).
WhenThe meet extends over 3 weeks from Saturday 22nd Aug to Saturday 12th September. These dates should mean that this popular area won’t be too busy, yet the mountain huts & other facilities will still be open.
SubsidyWe have allocated £2000 to subsidise all 2009 meets requiring accommodation. The amount for the Alpine Meet has yet to be allocated. Members can claim the cost of their campsite fees from the club after the meet. The subsidy can be claimed for a maximum of 21 nights camping. Members must produce receipts for camping from the nominated campsite. If the meet is over-subscribed, i.e. the total amount claimed exceeds the meet allocation, then each claim will be reduced pro rata to keep the total under the allocation.
The AreaThe Saas valley runs north to south, parallel and to the east of Mittertal (which contains Zermatt & the Swiss side of the Matterhorn). A pleasant two kilometre walk from the campsite takes you to Saas Fee, the major resort in the valley. There are ski lifts from both Grund & Fee. Both places have shops, restaurants, bars and tourist information offices, though Saas Fee is far larger.
WalkingThere are lots of way-marked paths in the area. The local tourist offices have details of walks. Walking guides include “Valais East” |
