BMSC Pyrenees Meet 07
Monday. After the long journey down Mag and Jim decided to have a relaxing day around the campsite while Betty and I made our first foray into the hills. We decided to walk up Pic Du Cabaliros (2334m) which we did from the campsite. This was a lovely walk climbing through the lower wooded slopes that opened out onto alpine meadows which we ascended in steep zigzags to a col in the ridge (Col de la Bassette), then from there along the ridge to the summit with fine views all around. We returned more or less via the same route making a round trip of 15Km with 1484m of ascent. While we were away Brian and Jean arrived and set up camp. We now had the full complement of members whom we knew were definitely coming on the meet.
Tuesday. After all the travelling of the day before Jean & Brian wanted a day to relax and explore the town etc., so Betty, Jim, Margaret and I walked up the Val de Jeret from La Raillere to Pont d’ Espagne. This walk follows a well-trodden path up the side of the river, which flows to Cauterets from the upper valley in a series of spectacular waterfalls. At Pont d’ Espagne a dramatic bridge crosses the gorge formed where a second river flowing from Lac De Gaube to the south joins the first, this too falling over more spectacular waterfalls. This point can also be reached by car and is a huge tourist attraction with all the usual cafés etc. We had a drink and some light |
